Instagram finally reveals how its ranking algorithm works

Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram explains the Instagrams ranking algorithm. In the post, he wishes to answer queries like: “How does Instagram decide what shows up for me first?”; “Why do some of my posts get more views than others?”; and “How does Instagram decide what to show me in Explore?”

“One of the main misconceptions we want to clear up is the existence of ‘The Algorithm,’” Mosseri says. “Instagram doesn’t have one algorithm that oversees what people do and don’t see on the app.”

“We want to make the most of your time, and we believe that using technology to personalize your experience is the best way to do that,” Mosseri says. “Each part of the app – Feed, Explore, Reels – uses its own algorithm tailored to how people use it. People tend to look for their closest friends in Stories, but they want to discover something entirely new in Explore. We rank things differently in different parts of the app, based on how people use them.”

The CEO of the app says that the Instagram Feed and Stories emphases on posts from people you follow. A lot of signals are used to regulate the order in which to display the content

As per Mosseri, the following are the important ranking algorithms across the main feed and carousel

Information about the posts:

This includes how many people liked it, how popular it is when it was posted, the location of the posts, and many other general details

Information about the content Creator:

This includes how many times people have interacted with the content creator in the past week

User activity:

This signal includes user activity including how many posts you have liked.

User’s history of interacting with Content Creators:

This signal includes, whether the user and the content creator have commented on each other’s posts

Adam Mosseri says that Instagram trying to avoid showing too many posts from the same user in a row
